The symbiosis between sounds and content on social media
As a content creator, the sounds and audios of your content has become more important in the content production process. What is this new symbiosis between sounds and content on social media? Let's dive in.
TikTok has become one of the world’s biggest social media, and what we can see, hear and read is that many of the younger generations see’s TikTok as their number one app to use right now.
I think the concept of TiKTok as an app, and the content within it, is very interesting and intriguing. It has been fascinating to see how the app has evolved from being purely a dancing-app (remember Musical.ly?), to becoming one of the biggest content sharing platforms – no matter what type of content you share.
As a content creator, the sounds and audios of your content has become more important in the content production process. The audio can in many cases determine the reach of a post, both to your current followers – but also to potential new ones.

Instagram has also taken its inspiration from TikTok, releasing ”Reels” in 2020 to answer to the demand of wanting to share short-form video content with an audio library to choose sounds from. And that is the unique thing with these applications nowadays – the audio library they both utilize. As a content creator, the sounds and audios of your content has become more important in the content production process. The audio in many cases determines the reach of a post, both to your current audience – but also to potential new followers. Therefore, we have to strategically create short-form video content with audio that we predict will trend – or is already trending.
Still, TikTok is the main trendsetter when it comes to sounds and audios. The invisible rule we as content creators live by today is to ”scour” the upcoming sounds on TikTok, and be ready when they jump over to Instagram Reels to ride the wave of the algorithm.
My favorite part with the addition of ”trending audios” to content on social media, is how it opens up for a broad range of content creators to participate in trends, and to join in with their own creative approach. This creates an engaging community within the app that encourages more content creation, but most of all – creativity in every different way possible.
The symbiosis between sounds and content on social media is something that I’m excited to follow in the upcoming years. I wonder how it will evolve – and how we as content creators will utilize the function further.
